I started noticing Maddie spacing out a lot, but first thought she was just daydreaming. I started to notice that I couldn't get her attention during these "staring" spells. I looked it up online and after a lot of research, came to the conclusion that she was having absence seizures. I took her to the doctor, who referred us to HOAG hospital for an EEG. We had the EEG on July 21, 2010. I could only let her sleep from midnight to 4 in the morning the night before. Needless to say, we were very tired and emotional that morning. Maddie cried as they were hooking her up to the machine. It doesn't hurt, but I'm sure it was very scary for her. She was such a trooper...managed to get a smile in for a picture. I had to hold back the tears. The test took about 45 minutes and after we were done, we went to In N Out and went home for a nap. We didn't get the results until 6 days later, but I already knew what it was. Having someone actually diagnose it was very hard to handle. We are on medicine #2 right now and hopeful that this will control the seizures with no side effects.
